Why Do Women Let Themselves Go?

why-women-stay-fat

What do you think it is that separates a fit mum from one who slowly but ever so surely lets themselves go? It’s not a deliberate choice, is it? I mean, surely no-one ever decided to consciously let the kilos pile on. And I wouldn’t even say that getting into shape post-baby is an exception, so you can hardly argue that it’s ‘normal’ for a woman to maintain any leftover baby weight for months and years to follow their pregnancy. Perhaps some women truly don’t care, but I do find that difficult to believe. Even if you didn’t care what others think of you, there are the physical restrictions to consider.

I mean, it’s uncomfortable to carry around excess weight. Your thighs rub together. You get sweatier and stickier when it’s hot. Your joints hurt and you end up spending money trying to get them looked after, or on frequent back massage. You spend more money on clothes (my experience overall with clients is that the happier someone is with their shape, the less money they spend on new clothes. I guess because they’re comfortable in their own skin).

And if you’re thinking it’s a time thing, or a money thing, or an energy thing or an “I don’t know where to start thing” well then, that’s really not good enough, is it?

Time? Even 10 minutes of exercise each day will boost your metabolism. Walking is not ideal, but it’s sure better than nothing, and what better time to embrace local streets and hills then with your pram? Bodyweight exercises such as squats and lunges and push ups can all be done at home in a mini-circuit.

Money? Pah. This one is definitely not a reason. It costs money to be unhealthy. The extra coffee because you’re tired. The treat you deserve ’cause you’ve had such a tough day. Any form of processed food over fresh. Even the strictest budget will benefit from buying only fresh and seasonal foods and cutting out the garbage. If not in the short-term then most definitely in the long-term as you save on doctors bills (healthy people are ill far less often), supplements for that constant sniffle and aching back, and (in many cases) eventually some kind of detailed and pricey last-ditch attempt to reclaim your body as you suddenly realise it may be too late.

Knowledge? Um, ever hear of a little thing called the internet? And yes, yes, of course there’s a ridiculous amount of conflicting information out there, and sure maybe you really don’t know where to start, but here’s a guarantee – if you don’t start somewhere you sure as heck aren’t gonna end up magically transforming. And a lot of it is just plain old common sense, isn’t it? Eat more fresh food. Eat less processed food. Don’t skip meals. Move your body. Rest when you can. Avoid sugars. The basics really do work, it’s just that it can be a bit, well, scary. To truly give something a shot rather than half-ass it. After all, you might find you don’t have the staying power, and then where would you be?

Energy? You gotta expend energy to create energy. And I know, I know, it’s pretty damn hard to summon up the motivation to embrace something new (especially when that something new is tough) after having a baby, but hey. Just how important is it to you?

Why Some Women Choose To Stay Fat

Women stay fat because it’s just not important enough to them to change. The fear of failure wins over the desire for success. Willpower crumbles as they’re faced with another indulgent social outing. Plans for a lounge-room workout fade when the baby finally drops off and you have some time to yourself. List any excuse (oh sorry, reason) you like and I guarantee I’ll knock it right back at you. If even women with auto-immune disease of the thyroid (pretty much the worst condition when it comes to sudden and tough-to-reverse weight gain) can fight for their health, then why can’t you? Because you just haven’t really made it a priority yet, have you?

Maybe it’s time to change.

Body plus baby? Easy!*
