And The Scales Go Up

Today’s weight: 65.5kg/144.1 pounds (9.5kg/20.9 pounds down; 7.5/17.6 to go)

scales and fruit

I can’t believe I haven’t lost any weight in the past 7 days. Scratch that – I’ve actually gained a half kilo since last Thursday. Fluctuation be damned, this was not on my agenda! And sure, I’m only 17 days post-birth, but shouldn’t that be all the more reason for the flubber and fluid to effortlessly melt away regardless of exercise or food behaviors? Apparently not.

It’s time to face facts – if breastfeeding (according to ‘them’) burns 800 calories per day, and in the past week I’ve done 2 Bikram yoga sessions and 4 gym sessions, including the new addition of 15-minutes hill climb intervals prior to my gym circuits, then there’s only one thing to blame.

I’m being just a little bit piggish. Either that or my cheeky deviance toward starchy carbs during my first trimester has created more of an insulin issue than I’d liked to have hoped. When it comes to weight loss, and certainly when it comes to post-natal weight loss, hormones always play a part. But I’d be lying if I said my diet had been tip-top over the past 2 weeks. So much for my promise to myself to completely avoid starchy carbs and sugars. My meals aren’t the problem – protein and fat based, loads of green veg, and all of it organic. Of course they’re being consumed at odd times of day – hey, night feeding is a hungry business – but the quality is definitely there.

It’s the in-between that’s the problem. Or more specifically, it’s the juice that’s the problem. For someone who has oft derided those who consider juice a health food, I’ve become embarrassingly addicted to the stuff these past 3 months or so. I can easily guzzle back a liter at a time, particularly if it’s post workout and I can (sorta) justify to myself that my body will burn through it. Well clearly that ain’t happening.

So here’s the plan. Cut the juice. No more than an inch a day. Cut back on the fruit – I’ve been indulging in loads of fresh summer mangoes and grapes but that sugar just isn’t being used. And most definitely cut out those sneaky treats like the occasional lamington or cookie. There’s not too much of that going on though, I really do think the juice is the main issue. Only one way to find out …

Body plus baby? Easy!*
